Think of a gigantic tree. That’s the inspiration behind the Osaka Fukoku Seimei Building. It stands before us now. This impressive structure graces Osaka’s skyline.
The Osaka Fukoku Seimei Building project took inspiration from a large tree. Its roots seem to spread across the ground. The tower’s outline tapers elegantly as it ascends. This creates a visual effect of a vertical asymptote.
Dominique Perrault Architecture designed it. They are based in Paris, France. Shimizu Corporation Architects & Engineers were the associated architects. The building reached completion in October 2010.
Look at the contrast between the base and upper sections of the Osaka Fukoku Seimei Building. It is accentuated by the treatment of the building’s “bark”. Broad “wood chips” appear on the lower levels. These gradually transition into a sleek wall as the building rises.
Notice the glass facade. It features encrusted mirrors at the base. These mirrors reflect the surrounding environment and the sky. The building limits its visual impact on the city. It avoids appearing as a massive, opaque block.
The facade is stratified. This creates a kaleidoscopic effect. It distorts the viewer’s perception. The real dimension of the Osaka Fukoku Seimei Building becomes fluid within the urban context.
