Opened in late November 2016, Apolo 111 Theater stands as a testament to Bucharest’s vibrant independent theater scene. Actor Bogdan Dumitrache, known for his role in the film “Child’s Pose”, spearheaded its creation. He envisioned a dedicated space for independent productions, a place beyond makeshift stages in bars. Dumitrache, along with filmmaker Calin Peter Netzer, creative director Catalin Rusu, and producer Dragoș Vâlcu, found the perfect spot. The Universul Palace, a hub of artistic ventures, housed a large hall that became the Apolo 111 Theater. This 850-square-meter area in central Bucharest offered ample space. The theater section includes an auditorium seating 127, a foyer, and dressing rooms. The remainder of the space houses a cafeteria, administrative offices, rehearsal rooms, and a casting studio. Dumitrache even relocated his own casting agency to this location. Apolo 111 Theater distinguishes itself with a unique repertoire and operational model. New productions run for six weeks, maximizing their development and minimizing downtime. This intense schedule allows the actors to refine their performances with each staging. The lean operation, with just four employees, contributes to the theater’s efficiency. Each season at Apolo 111 Theater operates under a different artistic director. The inaugural season, helmed by Dumitrache himself, focused on the intersection of theater and film. Director Radu Jude adapted Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s “Ali: Fear Eats the Soul” for the stage. Alex Maftei, known for films like “Hello! How Are You?” and “Miss Christina,” tackled Sergi Belbel’s “After the Rain”. Plans are underway for a stage version of Cristi Puiu’s Oscar-nominated film, “Sieranevada”. Apolo 111 Theater’s commitment to nurturing new talent is reflected in their programming. Morning performances cater to children, and there’s a dedicated program for emerging directors, set designers, choreographers, and musicians under 35. The Apolo 111 Theater isn’t just a venue; it’s a vibrant hub of artistic exploration and community. Evenings at the Apolo 111 offer an experience that is both innovative and intimate.
