Journey with me back to 1701. Imagine North Caldwell as part of a vast territory, newly acquired by colonists from the Sagamore Indians. This land, known as “Horseneck,” would later become Caldwell Township in 1798. North Caldwell remained a part of this township for a century, evolving from its early days into a charming suburban haven. Officially incorporated as a borough in 1898, North Caldwell began to carve its own distinct identity. Nestled in northwestern Essex County, North Caldwell boasts a rich history. The borough’s name distinguishes it from another Caldwell in the area. Once known as the “Denver of the East” due to its healthy climate, North Caldwell attracted numerous summer visitors. The borough saw significant growth between the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many homes you see today date back to the pre-World War II era, whispering stories of affluent families who once graced these streets. Originally farmland, the borough’s population swelled in the 1940s with the influx of New York City commuters. North Caldwell, a mere 20 miles from Midtown Manhattan, offers a unique blend of top-tier amenities and strong community bonds. This “green jewel” of Essex County remains predominantly residential, with single-family homes dotting its hilly, wooded landscape. The community spirit thrives in North Caldwell, evident in the active involvement of residents in local organizations. The North Caldwell Historical Society, Senior Citizens Organization, and the North Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department are just a few examples. The borough’s commitment to education shines through the North Caldwell Public Schools, serving pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Gould School, recognized by the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program in 2020, stands as a testament to the borough’s dedication to academic excellence. Older students attend the West Essex Regional School District, shared with neighboring towns. Beyond its educational prowess, North Caldwell nurtures a vibrant recreational scene. The North Caldwell Recreation Department provides numerous leisure activities for all ages. From youth and adult sports leagues to senior activities, festivals, and parades, there’s something for everyone. A six-lane, 25-meter pool with slides and a diving board provides a refreshing escape. The Caldwell Community Center, with its indoor pool, workout facility, and studios, adds another layer to the borough’s recreational offerings. North Caldwell also treasures its natural beauty. Grover Cleveland Park, spanning 41 acres, provides a tranquil setting for nature lovers. This park, named after a U.S. President born in nearby Caldwell, offers athletic fields, jogging paths, picnic areas, ice skating, and fishing ponds. Camp Wyanokie, a 150-acre ecological wonderland gifted to North Caldwell and its neighbors, further showcases the area’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage. The camp, surrounding a five-acre lake, offers an idyllic setting for hiking and picnicking. North Caldwell: a place where history, community, and nature intertwine to create an exceptional living experience.
