“A church founded in someone’s home?” you might ask. Yes, right here in front of you stands St. Philomena Of Mt. Zion All Nation SBC-HS Inc. This place has a fascinating history that started modestly in 1925. It all began in the humble abode of Brother Wesley and Sister Lula Austin in Lansing, Michigan. Imagine their home buzzing with fellow believers: John and Cally Austin, Matthew and Alice Dean, Lottie Gallimore, and Reverend Joseph Raymond, all driven by faith. Initially known as Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, this small group formed the heart of what would become a thriving community. They eventually found their first home on East Grand River Avenue in 1926. The spirit of growth led them to 1010 North Cedar Street, then to a permanent location at 1219 Case Street in 1929. The church continued to evolve under different leaders. The mortgage was even paid off during Rev. David D. Scott’s time. St. Philomena Of Mt. Zion All Nation SBC-HS Inc truly embodies the dedication and spirit of its founders. From a mission in a home to a beacon of faith, this place is a testament to the enduring power of belief and community.
