Long ago, in the heart of Erfurt, nestled beside the Gera River, lies the Mikwe. This isn’t just any building. The Mikwe is a portal to a time when whispers of ancient rituals filled the air. The Mikwe in Erfurt, first documented in the mid-13th century, served as a vital Jewish ritual bath. It stands as a testament to the rich Jewish heritage that once thrived in this city. Women primarily used the Mikwe for ritual purification. This included after childbirth and menstruation, before returning to their husbands. It was also used after contact with the dead or anything deemed ritually unclean. The Mikwe’s location near the Gera River was crucial. “Living” or flowing water was essential for the ritual bath. The river ensured a plentiful supply. Interestingly, the water level today is lower than in the Middle Ages. This likely resulted from the construction of a flood channel in the late 19th century. This channel altered the river’s flow through the city center. Medieval tax records reveal a bustling community surrounding the Mikwe. Jews and Christians lived side-by-side, a common pattern throughout Erfurt’s Jewish quarter. The Mikwe’s story isn’t without its shadows. The pogrom of 1349 caused significant damage. Marks on the north wall show evidence of repair and rebuilding. This resilient community, reformed in 1354, continued to use the Mikwe, a symbol of their enduring faith. After the expulsion of Erfurt’s Jewish community in 1453, the Mikwe’s purpose shifted. The basin was filled, and the space became a cellar. A devastating fire in 1472 further altered the structure. Walls were broken, partitions added, and the cellar accessed from a new entrance. The Mikwe lay hidden, its history buried beneath the earth, until its rediscovery in 2007. This rediscovery is a vital piece of Erfurt’s Jewish history. It strengthens the city’s “Jewish Life in Erfurt” network. The Mikwe now stands as a museum, encased in a protective structure. It offers a glimpse into a past filled with ritual and resilience. The Mikwe in Erfurt whispers tales of a community that thrived, persevered, and left an enduring legacy on this city.
