Imagine a small village. This village only had five houses. That was Crângași in 1835. Today Crângași is one of Bucharest’s smallest neighborhoods. It sits on the city’s west side. The Dâmbovița River flows nearby into Lacul Morii.
Crângași means “people living in a young forest”. This area has seen centuries of change. Coins from the 4th century were found here. These coins date back to Valentinian I’s reign. A furnace used for making clay pots was also discovered.
In 1835, a map showed Crângași as a tiny village. It had only five houses. These houses were between Bucharest, the Dâmbovița River and Marele Voievod commune. By 1922, part of the village joined Bucharest.
Life changed drastically between 1940 and 1960. Poor people built homes near the river. These houses were simple. In the early 1960s, communist-style apartment blocks appeared. This area was first known as Constructorilor housing estate. More apartment blocks were built in the 1980s. These had eight to ten stories.
The Dâmbovița River often flooded Crângași. This caused many problems. Lacul Morii was built in 1986 to solve this issue. This construction helped control the river.
Today, Crângași is known for its commercial area. Piața Crângași is a central flea market. You can find almost anything here. Fruits, cereals, shoes and electronics are all sold. In 2005, the Grant Shopping Center opened. It has 50 stores, a beauty salon and a coffee shop.
Recreation is important in Crângași. Lacul Morii and the nearby park are major attractions. During summer, a swimming pool and beach open. Crângași Park hosts free plays in the summer. There is also an artificial climbing panel inside Grant Metal.
Getting around Crângași is easy. You can use the tram line 41. Trolleybus 90 also serves the area. Buses 162, 163 and 178 are available. The Crângași metro station provides convenient access.
Crângași has transformed over time. From a small village to a bustling neighborhood. It offers a mix of history, commerce and recreation. Its story reflects Bucharest’s dynamic past. It also shows its vibrant present. Take a moment to appreciate the journey of Crângași.
