Ready to uncover a hidden gem? We are standing before the Whitmore Library. It is more than just books. It’s a community hub with a fascinating past.

Whitmore Library serves many residents in Salt Lake City. It is part of the Salt Lake County Library system. The library system has many volumes and circulates millions of items each year. The Whitmore Library itself offers meeting rooms and study spaces. But let’s delve into its unique story.

Did you know Whitmore Library first opened its doors in 1974? Imagine the excitement. Over 50000 people walked through its doors in the first six weeks. The community embraced it from the start.

The demand for knowledge and community space grew quickly. By 1977, just three years later, an addition was built. Whitmore Library was expanding to serve the needs of its patrons.

Whitmore Library got its name from Rich Whitmore. He donated the land on which it stands. His generosity helped create this vital community asset.

But there is more to the story. Back in the day, before the internet ruled all, news arrived differently. Whitmore Library had a teletype machine in its Information Department. It was cutting-edge for its time.

Library patrons could stop by and read the latest news. It covered local, national, and international events. People could also call 943-INFO. “Information Librarians” would share the news.

The Salt Lake County Library System has diligently documented its history. Since 1939, they have collected scrapbooks and photographs. A retired librarian, Ruby Cheesman, volunteered to digitize the collection. This includes the years 1939 through approximately 2004.

These scrapbooks offer a detailed look at the library system’s evolution. They show individual branches, staff, and programs. They highlight the libraries’ connections to their communities.

The library system began in 1938. There were no dedicated funds or library buildings. There weren’t even any books. The library services were mainly held within schools.

The county library recognized and enthusiastically participated in helping many organizations. This included supplying books to wounded World War II soldiers. They were recuperating in the Camp Kearns hospital. They also supplied books to children at the County Hospital. These children were stricken with polio during the epidemic of 1944.

Whitmore Library stands as a testament to community support. It is a place for learning, connection, and access to information. So, next time you are inside Whitmore Library, remember its history. Remember the teletype machine. Think about Rich Whitmore’s generosity. Think about all the people who walked through its doors since 1974. Whitmore Library is a pillar of the community.
