Tucked away in the Italian Alps, the hamlet of Biringhello whispers tales of ancient Lombard history. Biringhello isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a thread in the rich tapestry of Lombardy’s past. Biringhello, documented as early as 846, was originally known as “vico Raudo.” “Vico” denotes a cluster of houses, while “Raudo” possibly refers to a rudimentary castle. This tiny settlement witnessed the ebb and flow of power, from Lombard to Frankish rule. Imagine the resilience of the people of Biringhello. They yearned for independence, rebelling against the nobility around the year 1000. Emperor Henry II, recognizing their spirit, granted Biringhello the title of “capopieve.” He established a weekly market, a tradition that continues to this day. Biringhello’s location, near the Roman road Mediolanum-Verbannus, made it a strategic point. Roman troops would stop here on their journeys. The Romans even diverted the Olona River, creating a canal for efficient water transport. This boosted Biringhello’s importance in trade. Biringhello, like many settlements, wasn’t immune to conflict. In 1160, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa razed Biringhello during the siege of Milan. Yet, with unwavering determination, the people rebuilt their homes. By the 14th century, Biringhello found itself under Milanese control.
