In 1963, a seed of faith was planted. The Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst began its journey under Rabbi Nuchim Kornmehl’s guidance. Their first home was a modest building at 26 Columbia in Cedarhurst. The Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst quickly became a cornerstone of the community. It blended Jewish law observance with active participation in the wider world. The philosophy of religious Zionism resonated deeply within its walls. The congregation thrived. By the mid-1980s, the community experienced a surge in observant Jewish families. The Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst welcomed this growth. They appointed Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum as an assistant to Rabbi Kornmehl. This expanded their reach and solidified their presence. The need for a larger space became evident. In 1986, the Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst moved to its current location at the corner of Spruce and Broadway. This new building symbolized a new chapter. But the story didn’t end there. The Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst continued to expand. In 1993 and again in 2005, renovations transformed the building. It now boasts four sanctuaries, a youth center, a library, and even catering facilities. These additions reflect the vibrant life within. Leadership transitions marked significant moments. When Rabbi Kornmehl passed away in 1992, Rabbi Teitelbaum stepped into the role of Morah D’asra. He served until 2021. Then, Rabbi Ya’akov Trump, who had served as an assistant rabbi, took the helm. Today, the Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst serves over 440 families. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. A new Sefer Torah, dedicated to Rabbi Emeritus Moshe Teitelbaum and his wife, Rebbetzin Sori Teitelbaum, further enriches the Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst’s story. It represents the ongoing commitment to Jewish tradition and the vibrant future of this special community.
