It’s a living chronicle of Hillside’s history, woven into the fabric of the community. Initially, Hillside High School accommodated students in grades 10 through 12. The lower grades remained at the Coe Avenue School, which transitioned into a grammar school. This division marked an important step in the development of Hillside’s educational system.
Hillside High School’s story is one of growth and adaptation. The school’s Maroon and Gray colors represent the strength and resilience of its community. The Comets, Hillside High’s athletic teams, compete in the Union County Interscholastic Athletic Conference. They have a proud history, particularly in football. The Comets secured the North II Group II state championship in 1985 and clinched the Central Jersey Group II championship from 2017 to 2019. These victories weren’t just athletic triumphs. They were moments of unity and pride for the entire Hillside community.
In 2001, Hillside High School students collaborated with students from David Brearley High School on a powerful project. They developed literary and art pieces exploring the theme of bigotry. The exhibit, titled “Making Connections: Two Culturally Diverse Schools Address Prejudice and Hatred by Studying the Holocaust Together,” was presented at Kean University. Local Holocaust survivors and concentration camp liberators attended the exhibit. This event showcased the power of education to bridge divides and promote understanding.
Hillside High School’s influence extends beyond the classroom and the playing field. It has nurtured a vibrant student body, fostering their growth and empowering them to make a difference.
