Replicated in 1964, the Fushimi Momoyama Castle Stone stands as a symbol of a rich and turbulent past. This is not just a stone. It is a piece of history.

Fushimi Castle is also known as Momoyama Castle. It is located in Fushimi Ward in Kyoto. The castle’s history is complex and fascinating.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi built the original castle from 1592 to 1594. He intended it as his retirement residence. The castle was lavishly decorated. It even featured a Golden Tea Room with gold leaf on the walls and implements.

Unfortunately an earthquake destroyed Fushimi Castle in 1596 only two years after its completion. It was rebuilt soon after.

In 1600, Torii Mototada defended the castle against Ishida Mitsunari. This was a celebrated act of bravery. Torii’s defense delayed Ishida’s forces. It allowed Tokugawa Ieyasu time to build his army. This had a profound effect on the Battle of Sekigahara. Tokugawa Ieyasu ultimately won.

In 1623, the castle was dismantled. Many of its rooms were incorporated into temples across Japan. Some temples in Kyoto like Yōgen-in and Genkō-an even have blood-stained ceilings. These ceilings were once floors in Fushimi Castle. Here, survivors of Torii’s garrison committed seppuku.

Emperor Meiji’s tomb was built on the original site of the castle in 1912. The current replica was built in 1964 nearby. It served as a museum and the main attraction of a small theme park. The castle closed to the public in 2003. However, the grounds reopened in 2007.

The Azuchi-Momoyama period gets its name from Fushimi Castle. This period represents a time of unification and cultural flourishing in Japan. The area around Fushimi Castle was known as Peach Flower Village. Numerous peach trees once stood here.

Fushimi flourished as a castle town. It became a major transportation hub connecting Kyoto with other regions. Sake breweries thrived supplying the town. Gekkeikan one of the famous sake brewery was founded here in 1637.

The Gokonomiya Shrine was relocated to the northeast of the castle. This was in the direction of the Demon’s Gate. The shrine has been worshipped as a guardian deity.

Today, Fushimi Momoyama Castle Stone reminds us of Fushimi Castle’s layered past. The wars, the bravery and cultural significance remain. As you stand here, imagine the whispers of samurai. They once walked this ground. Think of the vibrant peach blossoms that once adorned these hills. This stone is a silent witness. It has seen centuries of Japanese history unfold.
