Hidden behind the walls of the Kleine Synagoge in Erfurt lies a secret. A secret whispered through centuries. A secret of survival.

The Kleine Synagoge stands before you. It’s the oldest undamaged synagogue in all of Germany. Its pale-yellow facade reflects the Gera River nearby. This unassuming building is a testament to resilience. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living archive. A witness to Erfurt’s rich and often turbulent Jewish history.

Imagine Erfurt in the 12th century. A Jewish community flourishes. Some believe their presence stretches back even further to 742. Their lives intertwine with the city’s growth. They prosper near the Krämerbrücke the important Merchant’s Bridge. Then disaster struck. The Black Plague. In the early 1300s over 100 Erfurt Jews perished. The survivors faced expulsion. They couldn’t return until around 1350. They rebuilt their lives. They rebuilt their community.

A new synagogue rose in 1357. This original synagogue was Gothic in style. Unfortunately it didn’t survive. King Wenceslas imposed harsh taxes. He impoverished the community. By 1458 the Jews were expelled once again. They wouldn’t return for centuries.

The Kleine Synagoge we see today was built in 1840. It sits near the ruins of that original Gothic synagogue. It served as a place of worship until 1884. A larger synagogue was constructed then. The Kleine Synagoge was sold. It was transformed into a vinegar factory. Later it became apartments. This unlikely series of transformations saved it.

During Kristallnacht in 1938 the Nazis destroyed synagogues across Germany. The Kleine Synagoge escaped destruction. Its secular use masked its identity. Its hidden identity secured its survival. It remained untouched.

In 1993 the Kleine Synagoge was purchased for restoration. During the restoration workers made an incredible discovery. The women’s gallery and the Torah shrine were perfectly preserved behind the walls. A testament to resilience they had survived intact.

The synagogue reopened in 1998. It is now a museum. It showcases Erfurt’s Jewish heritage. It tells the stories of those who worshipped here. The stories of those who lived through hardship and persecution. The stories of those who survived. The stories of a community’s resilience. Step inside. Let the history of the Kleine Synagoge surround you. Let its silent stories speak to you.
