Did you know that the South Reservoir East Dike isn’t just any dam? It’s a testament to Boston’s intricate water system. Let’s dive into the story of this crucial structure.

The South Reservoir East Dike stands in Middlesex County. Its coordinates are N42.44176 degrees and W71.11450 degrees. The South Reservoir East Dike sits at an elevation of 193 feet above mean sea level.

Dams like the South Reservoir East Dike are vital. They control water flow and ensure a steady supply. Boston’s early settlers relied on wells. Springs provided accessible water through the soil.

As Boston grew, its water demands surged. The town then looked to Jamaica Pond in Roxbury. In 1796, the Jamaica Plain Aqueduct Company formed. Wooden pipes carried water to Boston.

But one pond wasn’t enough. Boston sought larger water sources. In 1848, the Cochituate water system was constructed. Three distributing reservoirs were then built in the city. These were at Beacon Hill, South Boston, and East Boston.

The Beacon Hill Reservoir held over 2.6 million gallons. It stood just over 100 feet above tide marsh level. South Boston Reservoir held 7.5 million gallons. East Boston Reservoir had a capacity of 5.6 million gallons.

The South Boston Reservoir was later replaced by South Boston High School. In East Boston, a playground replaced the reservoir. Later, the new East Boston High School was built on the site.

In 1868, Boston annexed Roxbury, Brighton, and Dorchester. The Cochituate Standpipe was added at Fort Hill in Roxbury. This supplied water to higher elevations. Parker Hill Reservoir replaced the standpipe because it was at a much higher elevation than Fort Hill.

The pumping station at Chestnut Hill replaced the need for elevated reservoirs. This cleared the way for the reuse of lands in the city.

The South Reservoir East Dike still serves a crucial role. It helps manage water resources. Its location in Middlesex County ensures a steady water flow. Next time you turn on the tap, remember the South Reservoir East Dike. It stands as a silent guardian of Boston’s water supply.
