Got your pen and paper ready? You’ll want to jot down some thoughts at the Wisdom Tree. This solitary pine stands atop Burbank Peak. It’s a symbol of resilience and hope overlooking Los Angeles.

The Wisdom Tree, also known as the Tree of Life, is more than just a tree. It’s a destination. Many hikers make the steep climb to its perch. Once here, they soak in the views and leave a piece of themselves behind.

Legend says that the Wisdom Tree was once a discarded Christmas tree. Planted on the peak, it defied the odds and thrived. Adding to its mystique, the Wisdom Tree miraculously survived the devastating Hollywood Hills Fire of 2007. While flames consumed the surrounding area, it stood strong.

In 2010, the area around the Wisdom Tree was slated for luxury homes. But local activists rallied. They raised enough money to buy the land. They then donated it to Griffith Park. Because of this effort, the Wisdom Tree remains a place for all to enjoy.

Mark Rowlands is a local resident and the tree’s guardian. He placed a notebook and pens in an ammo box at the tree’s base. Visitors began writing messages of hope and inspiration. The tradition continues to this day. People share their thoughts and dreams. They also read the words of others.

The hike to the Wisdom Tree is steep. It will definitely make your lungs burn. The trail is about 3 miles round trip. It has an extremely steep ascent. But the panoramic views are worth the effort.

From the summit, you can see both Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. Lake Hollywood glistens below. An American flag stands in honor of 9/11. And of course, there is the Wisdom Tree.

The Wisdom Tree hike is doable for most people. Trail runners or hiking shoes are recommended. Bring water. There’s almost no shade.

You can extend your hike from the Wisdom Tree. Hike to Cahuenga Peak, the highest point in Griffith Park. Or continue to the Hollywood Sign. It will add another 1.4 miles to your hike.

Remember, the Wisdom Tree is special. Treat it with respect. Don’t carve into it or break off branches. Pack out any trash you see. Leave it better than you found it. This is the greatest wisdom of all.
