Gliding through time’s currents let’s explore Gggingen. This Augsburg district nestled between the Singold and Wertach rivers boasts a history richer than its fertile lands.

Gggingen’s story begins long before its first documented mention. Evidence points to settlements dating back to the Bronze Age. Imagine the Hallstatt culture flourishing here. Roman roads snaked through this very area connecting Augsburg with far-flung destinations. Traces of a Roman aqueduct hint at the importance of the Wertach River as a vital water source for ancient Augusta Vindelicorum. The area even played a part in the Allgu Road a crucial route connecting Augsburg to Kempten im Allgu before it crossed the Alps. A milestone marking this ancient road still stands just south of Gggingen’s border in Inningen. The Allamanni tribes settled this land following the Roman Empire’s decline. Then in 969 the name Geginga appeared in the annals of Ulrich of Augsburg marking the first documented reference to Gggingen.

For centuries Gggingen thrived as a suburb of Augsburg. The 19th century saw significant growth as it expanded alongside Augsburg’s city center. Then from 1804 to 1862 Gggingen served as the seat of the provincial court and governmental offices. A pivotal moment arrived with the arrival of Friedrich Hessing a pioneering orthopedist. Hessing’s innovative techniques transformed Gggingen’s identity. It went from a humble suburb to a regional medical center of renown. The medical supplies factory he established became the area’s largest employer lasting until the 1970s. This factory also served as a symbol of Gggingen’s transformation into a significant center for medical technology.

The Kurhaus Gggingen stands as a testament to that era. Originally a wellness center built by Hessing it now serves as a multi-use civic building. This transition reflects Gggingen’s adaptability and growth throughout history. Its past as a center of medicine is still remembered in the Hessing Foundation which maintains clinics for children. A further highlight is the Dr.-Maidl-Villa. This one of Gggingen’s oldest buildings allegedly hosted the famed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

In 1954 Gggingen took on a humanitarian role. It became a sponsor for German citizens from Nejdek Czechoslovakia who were expelled following World War II. This act of sponsorship is a demonstration of compassion and solidarity during a period of upheaval. Gggingen’s history thus highlights medical innovation humanitarian action and the evolution of a small settlement into a thriving district.

In 1969 and again in 1972 Gggingen became officially part of Augsburg. Its journey from a Bronze Age settlement through Roman times and to a modern-day district is a story well worth experiencing. The Rmerturm a large tower from the turn of the 19th century with a replica of the Augsburger Quadrant further enhances Gggingen’s legacy. This blend of history and modernity makes Gggingen a captivating Augsburg neighborhood.
