Why does this bridge carry water over water? We are standing here at the Zirbelnuss-Kanal-Brücke. It is a small but fascinating part of Augsburg’s water management system. You see, the Zirbelnuss-Kanal-Brücke isn’t just any bridge. It’s a testament to Augsburg’s ingenuity, a solution to a unique challenge. It was built in 1848 by Carl August Reichenbach. He was a descendant of Georg von Reichenbach, the brilliant engineer who had earlier revolutionized Augsburg’s waterworks. The bridge was originally built to carry the water of the Brunnenbach. This channel supplied the Lower Waterworks at the Brunnenturm. The Brunnenturm is situated on a hill and needed a reliable water supply. The Zirbelnuss-Kanal-Brücke, with its distinctive Augsburg city emblem featuring the pine cone, allowed the Brunnenbach to cross over the Stadtbach. This ensured the water reached the waterworks and was then pumped up to the tower. The bridge is a fantastic example of Augsburg’s industrial heritage. Its cast-iron structure, a product of the Reichenbach’sche Maschinenfabrik, showcases the city’s prowess in ironworks during the Industrial Revolution. You can still see the inscription on its side. The Zirbelnuss-Kanal-Brücke may be small, but it’s a symbol of Augsburg’s innovative spirit. It’s a reminder that sometimes, even in engineering, the most elegant solutions are the most fascinating.
