Ever wondered how a humble seed of faith can blossom into a magnificent temple? Here at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Tegucigalpa. It’s a story that began in 1952. President Juan Manuel Galvez granted permission for missionary work in Honduras.

The first missionaries James T. Thorup and George W. Allen arrived in December. In March 1953 the first local converts were baptized in the Humuya River. Jose Santos Ortega Flores was among them. The Tegucigalpa Branch was organized the very next day. Jose became the first Honduran to receive the Aaronic Priesthood.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Honduras grew steadily. In 1963 the first meetinghouse in Honduras was completed in Colonia Palmira. Early members yearned for the blessings of temple service. The nearest temple was far away in Arizona.

In 1976 Honduran members made their first organized temple trip by bus to the Mesa Arizona Temple. It was a ten-day round trip showing their dedication. Temples were later built in Mexico City and Guatemala City shortening the journey.

On June 9 2006 the First Presidency announced plans to build a temple in Tegucigalpa. It would be the first Latter-day Saint temple in Honduras. Spencer V. Jones announced the exciting news. The Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple became the sixth temple in Central America.

Ground was first broken in June 2007. But construction was halted due to concerns from city officials. They worried it would overshadow the Our Lady of Suyapa Basilica. Out of respect for the city the Church relocated the temple.

Ground was broken again in September 2009 near Toncontín International Airport. The public was invited to an open house in 2013. More than 210000 people visited including President Porfirio Lobo Sosa and First Lady Rosa Elena de Lobo.

A cultural celebration featuring music and dance took place in March 2013. About 4100 Latter-day Saints participated. Approximately 15000 people attended the program. The Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple was dedicated on March 17 2013. Dieter F. Uchtdorf presided over the dedication.

The temple stands 41.2 meters tall with an angel Moroni on top. In 2019 President Russell M. Nelson announced a second temple would be built in San Pedro Sula. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Honduras has over 187000 members. The Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple stands as a beacon of faith. It symbolizes the growth and dedication of its members. A testament to their enduring commitment.
