“Come and be at home” Father Michael P. Jones says. These are the words that echo in the hearts of those who seek solace within the walls of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church stands as one of Tampa’s oldest churches. Its history is rich with faith and community. The Romanesque structure is a testament to time.

Imagine stepping back to 1905. The dedication of Sacred Heart Church marked a new chapter. The parish was officially renamed Sacred Heart Parish. Before that day the first Catholic parish was named St. Louis Parish in 1860. It honored Fr. Luis de Cancer. He was a Dominican missionary martyred on Tampa Bay’s shores in 1549.

The church’s story is one of growth and adaptation. As Tampa flourished the parish expanded. By 1897 the decision was made. A new church was needed to accommodate the growing congregation.

Construction began in 1898. The cornerstone was laid in 1900. The architect Nicholas J. Clayton brought his vision to life. He was known for designing many Roman Catholic Churches.

Consider the details that make Sacred Heart special. The 135-foot dome soars above. Solid oak pews and doors add warmth. Porcelain tiles gleam underfoot. The Carrara marble altar stands as a focal point.

Seventy stained glass windows illuminate the space. Franz Mayer & Co. of Munich created these works of art. The Resurrection Window tells a powerful story. It depicts Christ’s triumph over death.

Sacred Heart has been a place for generations. Some families have celebrated weddings here for six generations. This demonstrates a lasting connection to faith.

The church once operated Sacred Heart Academy. It was established in 1931. The changing demographics forced its closure in 2012. Jesuit High School also has roots in the parish. It began in the sacristy in 1899.

In 2005 the Jesuit community passed the pastoral duties to the Franciscan Friars. Father Stephen Mimnaugh is the current pastor. Sacred Heart continues its mission.

In 2010 the Diocese of St. Petersburg recognized the church’s significance. They added a Catholic Heritage Marker. It honors the church’s place in history.

Today Sacred Heart Catholic Church welcomes all. Its doors are open to those seeking faith. It is a beacon of hope in the heart of Tampa. The Franciscans continue the legacy.
