Is this a place of worship or a court of law? Xingtian Temple, right before your eyes, seems to embody both. The grand halls and intricate carvings whisper of ancient justice, echoing the spirit of Guan Yu, the deity enshrined here. Xingtian Temple, completed in 1968, may be a young temple, but it quickly ascended to become one of the most visited in Taipei. This popularity, however, isn’t solely due to the magnificent architecture or the deity’s reputation as a god of war, justice, and even prosperity. It’s the story of Xingtian Temple’s origins, intertwined with the legacy of Master Kong Zhenzi, that truly draws the crowds. Legend has it that Master Kong, a devout follower of Guan Yu, established a small temple dedicated to the deity in 1943. This initial Xingtian Temple, humble in comparison to the structure before you, was located on Dihua Street. Master Kong, believing in Guan Yu’s power, sought his divine intervention when a malaria outbreak struck the Sanxia coal mines. The miners, desperate for a cure, turned to Master Kong and his faith. Miraculously, their prayers were answered, and the outbreak subsided. This event solidified Guan Yu’s reputation as a protector and healer, attracting more followers to Xingtian Temple. Today, Xingtian Temple stands as a beacon of faith and tradition. The air hums with the silent prayers of devotees seeking guidance, prosperity, and protection. Even without the traditional incense smoke, banned in 2014 in a nod to environmental consciousness, the atmosphere remains palpably spiritual. As you explore the temple grounds, remember the story of Master Kong and the malaria miracle. It’s a story that speaks of faith, community, and the enduring power of belief.
