Vargem Grande neighborhood started in 1989. It is now home to about 40,000 people. The park spans about 53 hectares. It is within the larger Área de Proteção Ambiental Capivari-Monos.
Recently, scientists discovered more evidence. They found spherules. These tiny particles formed during the impact. These spherules show that the impact created extreme conditions. Temperatures reached 5,000 degrees Celsius. Pressure soared to 40,000 times normal atmospheric pressure.
Victor Velázquez Fernandez led the study. He is a geologist at the University of Sāo Paulo. He found that the spherules’ composition matches the crater’s rocks. This suggests the impactor may have been a comet.
