Paróquia São Paulo Apóstolo e Nossa Senhora Aparecida stands as a beacon. It is a testament to the enduring devotion to Our Lady Aparecida. But who was Our Lady Aparecida?
Her story begins in 1717. Fishermen struggled to catch fish in the Paraíba River. They needed a large catch for a banquet honoring São Paulo Governor Pedro de Almeida. Despite prayers their nets came up empty. Then one fisherman hauled up a headless statue of the Virgin Mary.
He cast his net again. This time he found the statue’s head. The fishermen cleaned the statue. They wrapped it in cloth. Suddenly their luck changed. Their nets overflowed with fish. The statue was believed to be the work of Frei Agostino de Jesus. He was a monk from São Paulo.
Initially the statue resided in Felipe Pedroso’s home. He was one of the fishermen. People flocked to pray before it. Pedroso’s family built a small chapel. This chapel was replaced in 1734 with a larger one. In 1834 the first basilica was erected on the site.
As pilgrimages grew a new basilica’s construction began in 1955. This Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida became a major site.
Our Lady Aparecida is the principal patroness of Brazil. “Nossa Senhora Aparecida” means “Our Lady Revealed”. The basilica is the largest cathedral in the world by interior area after St Peter’s.
The devotion to Our Lady Aparecida grew. Pope Leo XIII mentioned Brazilian devotion to her. Pope Pius X granted a canonical coronation to her image in 1904. Pope Pius XI declared her the Patroness of Brazil in 1930.
The basilica itself was consecrated by Pope John Paul II. This happened on July 4 1980. Pope Benedict XVI visited in 2007. He awarded the shrine a Golden Rose. Pope Francis also visited in 2013.
The architecture is Romanesque Revival. Benedito Calixto Neto designed it. Construction began in 1955. The structure is in the form of a Greek Cross.
Inside Paróquia São Paulo Apóstolo e Nossa Senhora Aparecida countless stories unfold. Each year thousands of men gather here. They participate in the Men’s Rosary movement.
This basilica has received the Golden Rose three times. Pope Paul VI gave the first in 1967. Pope Benedict XVI blessed the second in 2007. Pope Francis gave the third in 2017.
