Whispers of Viking tales carried on the sea breeze greet you here at Fu00f6hr-Amrum. Before you stands more than just an administrative entity. It represents centuries of history. The Amt Fu00f6hr-Amrum is a testament to the enduring spirit of the North Frisian Islands.

Imagine this area once connected to the mainland. Glacial deposits formed the islands of Sylt Fu00f6hr and Amrum about 15000 years ago. Marshland initially linked them. Vikings left their mark. Large grave sites near Goting and Hedehusum are proof. So is the circular rampart of Lembecksburg near Borgsum.

South Frisians arrived in the 8th century. They established agriculture and sea salt production. Around 1200 the first Christian churches appeared. St Johannes Church in Nieblum was one of the earliest. Fu00f6hr itself was first mentioned in 1231.

Then came the devastating Saint Marcellus’s flood of 1362. It reshaped the coastline. Only the geest ridges remained as islands. Another storm surge the Burchardi flood struck in 1634. These events shaped the landscape we see today. Whaling became a significant industry alongside agriculture.

Wyk on Fu00f6hr became a popular sea bathing spot in 1819. It even served as a summer residence for the Danish king for several years. In 1864 Schleswig and the North Frisian Islands fell to Prussia. Fu00f6hr had been a Danish enclave for centuries. Frisian is still spoken in the Westerland section. Low German is more common in the Osterland area.

Emigration to North America followed. More people of Fu00f6hr origin live in the United States than on the island itself. The Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park was established in 1985. It’s the largest national park in Germany. It showcases the rich biodiversity of the Wadden Sea.

Fu00f6hr-Amrum encompasses eleven municipalities. Each holds a unique history. They share a collective identity. They are all tied to the sea and its rhythms. Their place names often end in -um meaning home.

The Amt Fu00f6hr-Amrum is more than a boundary on a map. It’s a living tapestry woven from Viking legacies. It’s stitched with the threads of Frisian culture. It’s a testament to resilience in the face of nature’s fury. It’s a legacy of seafaring and farming. It is a story still unfolding.
