Elizabeth Macquarie, wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, played a significant role in the development of these very gardens from 1816 onwards. Hall’s creation incorporates wrought iron and sandstone, materials that echo the era of early colonial settlement. The Folly for Mrs Macquarie isn’t just visually striking. It tells a story. Look closely, and you’ll notice a raised arm clutching a dagger. This is taken directly from the Macquarie family crest. Above, a domed roof of Norfolk Island pine fronds provides a deceptive sense of tranquility. The true nature of the folly is revealed beneath. A ceiling of animal bones serves as a stark reminder of the native species displaced by the colony’s expansion. Barbed wire forms the “windows,” symbolizing the division of the land and the impact of colonization. The Folly for Mrs Macquarie invites contemplation. It asks us to consider the complex layers of history, the triumphs and follies, that have shaped this beautiful land.
