Reaching Mermaids Cave requires a short but steep descent. Over 100 steps lead down to this enchanting spot. The staircase is carved between towering sandstone cliffs. It creates an almost surreal atmosphere. The walk is relatively easy and family-friendly despite the stairs. Keep an eye on children though. The steps can be uneven especially when wet.
At the bottom of the stairs a small amphitheatre-like valley unfolds. The cave and waterfall are on your left. You can walk right behind the waterfall. It’s a narrow passage though so watch your step. The waterfall is particularly beautiful after rainfall. Otherwise it may be just a thin ribbon of water.
Interestingly Mermaids Cave even has a cinematic past. It served as a filming location for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. The spot was used as the ‘crack in the earth’.
