A whisper of history. That’s what Busby’s Bore obelisk seems to offer. Here we stand before this unassuming stone monument. It marks a remarkable feat of engineering a testament to convict labour and ingenuity. Busby’s Bore wasn’t just a bore. It was Sydney’s second water supply a lifeline for a burgeoning colony.

Imagine Sydney in the 1820s. The Tank Stream its original water source was polluted beyond use. The city relied on wells and water carted from distant swamps. Enter John Busby a mineral and water surveyor. He proposed a bold solution a 3.6 kilometre tunnel carrying water from the Lachlan Swamps now Centennial Park to Hyde Park.

Construction began in 1827. Convict labour toiled for a decade. They faced treacherous conditions working in near darkness often up to their waists in water. The project wasn’t without its challenges. Quicksand in Moore Park forced rerouting. Busby’s own son William assisted him above ground. Busby himself reportedly feared entering the tunnel fearing the convicts’ habits. Despite these hardships Busby’s Bore began supplying drinkable water in 1830. It was finally completed in 1837.

The water flowed by gravity a gentle drop of 53 centimetres over the entire length. This clever system supplied the General Hospital in Macquarie Street. Pipes later extended to the Port supplying ships. The bore’s impact extended beyond mere water supply. It spurred the creation of the Sydney Corporation the first steps toward municipal administration. It shows the government’s response to the city’s growing needs.

Busby’s Bore wasn’t just a tunnel. It was a symbol of convict resilience and early Australian engineering. It helped transform Sydney from a penal colony to a thriving city. Its legacy lives on in this obelisk a silent tribute to a remarkable chapter in Sydney’s history. The obelisk stands here as a reminder of the challenges overcome and the ingenuity of those who built it. Busby’s Bore left a lasting mark on the city’s development. It’s a story well worth remembering.
