The green-gold mosaic gleams brightly in the Augsburg sun, a testament to the resilience of the Augsburg Synagogue. This majestic structure, built between 1913 and 1917, stands as a beacon of Jewish culture and history in Bavaria. The synagogue was once a symbol of the Jewish community’s self-assurance, a place where over 1,000 Augsburg Jews gathered to practice their faith and celebrate their heritage. The synagogue’s unique blend of architectural styles – Art Nouveau, Byzantine, and Orientalizing details – reflects the community’s desire to express their identity as German citizens of Jewish faith. The architects, Fritz Landauer and Dr. Heinrich Lömpel, created a masterpiece of modern design, with a 95-foot-high reinforced-concrete dome topped with the shimmering mosaic. Sadly, in 1938, during the November Pogroms, the synagogue was desecrated and set on fire. However, a nearby filling station prevented the flames from completely consuming the building. The synagogue was finally restored in 1985 after years of repair and renovation. Today, the refurbished Augsburg Synagogue serves as a poignant reminder of the community’s enduring spirit. It is a place where the echoes of Jewish life in Augsburg continue to resonate, a testament to the unwavering strength of a community that has faced adversity and emerged stronger.
