Has anyone ever told you about the time the old Weberhaus in Augsburg decided it was too good for its own walls? This grand old building, standing proud here at Moritzplatz, has seen a lot since 1389! It started as the hangout spot for Augsburg’s coolest crowd: the weavers’ guild. Imagine, this place buzzing with deals being struck over bolts of luxurious fabric, the air thick with the scent of fresh dye! They even had their own in-house decorator, Peter Kaltenhoff, who in 1457 covered their meeting room walls with the most fabulous wooden panels you ever did see. Sadly, guilds went out of fashion, and the Weberhaus was sold. It got a bit of a makeover inside, and those amazing panels? They ended up in a museum! But the city of Augsburg realized they missed their Weberhaus. By the 20th century, the old place was looking a bit worse for wear. Even though folks like the architect Gabriel von Seidl put up a fight, the city decided to tear down the original Weberhaus. In 1913, on the very same spot, they built a brand new, bigger, better version. Talk about a glow-up! Even though it’s not the original building, this Weberhaus still remembers its roots and keeps the weaver’s spirit alive here on Moritzplatz.
