Dreaming of Italian summer palaces Duke Karl Eugen built the first B\u00e4renschl\u00f6ssle in 1768. Today we stand before the fourth version of this charming building. Its history is overshadowed by destruction and rebuilding.

The B\u00e4renschl\u00f6ssle is nestled in the woodlands on the shores of the B\u00e4rensee lake. It served as a pleasure palace for Carl Eugen. Imagine gondolas once graced the lake. He brought them from Italy.

After Carl Eugen’s death in 1793 the palace fell into disrepair. In 1817 King Wilhelm I ordered its demolition. He replaced it with a hunting lodge. This marked a shift from pleasure to practicality.

The B\u00e4renschl\u00f6ssle faced further trials. It twice burned to the ground. Yet each time it was rebuilt. The current structure largely mirrors the former style. Casement doors replaced the upper-storey windows.

Consider J\u00fcrgen Unm\u00fc\u00dfig. His family now runs the restaurant. His mother began offering simple fare to walkers in 1964. J\u00fcrgen himself roamed the deer park as a boy. His grandfather was a forest ranger.

Notice the B\u00e4renschl\u00f6ssle’s surroundings. The area is part of the Wildpark. It is a popular destination for Stuttgart’s inhabitants. The B\u00e4renschl\u00f6ssle got its name from the B\u00e4renbach. Today it is called Bernhardsbach.

Inside the B\u00e4renschl\u00f6ssle you will find a restaurant. The first floor is available for private events. Many celebrate weddings here. In summer the lawn fills with families.
