Behold the Junobrunnen a testament to unity. This magnificent fountain stands proudly in Stuttgart’s Bad Cannstatt. It’s more than just water and stone. It’s a symbol of a marriage.

In 1910 Emil Kiemlen a Cannstatt native unveiled his masterpiece. He created the Junobrunnen to celebrate the merging of Cannstatt and Stuttgart in 1905. His intention was to beautify the city. He also wanted to commemorate this important event.

The neoclassical style is breathtaking. Juno the Roman goddess of marriage stands tall. She is almost naked. She symbolizes the union of the two cities. A peacock accompanies her. It represents beauty. Kiemlen hoped to add beauty to the cityscape.

Notice the four dolphins at the base. Each carries a cherubic Putto. They represent the area’s agriculture and fishing. The Putti hold a seashell a sheaf of wheat a fruit basket and grapes. Dolphins also represent fertility in Greek mythology. This adds another layer of meaning to the scene.

The Verschönerungsverein Cannstatt the Cannstatt Beautification Society originally erected the Junobrunnen. Today the city of Stuttgart and a local association maintain it. The Junobrunnen is a source of pride for the citizens. It is a beloved landmark. It continues to celebrate the enduring union of two vibrant cities. The fountain operates from mid-May to mid-September. Its beauty and symbolism are unforgettable.
