What if these walls could talk? Kaggeholms slott has stories etched into every stone. This isn’t just a building. It’s a chronicle of Swedish history.
Kaggeholms slott sits on Helgö. It is a peninsula in southern Ekerö Municipality. While many call it a “slott” or castle, it technically began as a manor. This is like many other stately Swedish homes. It has no royal history. The name “Kaggeholm” came in 1647. Count Lars Kagg became the owner. But the site’s story began long before. Evidence shows people lived here as early as the 200s AD.
Let’s journey back. The first mention of this place was in 1287. Imagine the landscape. The farm was called Vettersjö. Later in the 1500s, families Grip and Bååt owned it. Fast forward to 1647. Lars Kagg, a key figure in Swedish politics, acquired the estate. He was allied with King Gustavus Adolphus. He served on the Privy Council. Kagg was also a Field Marshal during the Thirty Years’ War. He renamed it Kaggeholm.
In the 1720s, a transformation began. Nicodemus Tessin the Younger designed a chateau-style manor house. Tessin was a famous Baroque architect. The Kaggeholms slott took its present form in the mid-19th century. Major changes occurred then. In the 1730s, Isac Funck built the current manor house building. The Rococo style was fashionable. You can see it in the high windows. Also notice the bulge on the backside. That is from the oval salon inside. A bell tower sits on the roof. It was added during an 1840s roof renovation. The garden lies on the backside.
Banker Martin Aronwitsch bought Kaggeholm in 1917. He planned grand renovations. Only the garden was remodeled. The pond on the backside shows Aronwitsch’s touch.
Kaggeholms herrgården has had several prominent owners. Fredrik Vult von Steijern was one. He was the editor-in-chief of Dagens Nyheter. He lived here from 1897 to 1913. He was influential in Stockholm’s cultural scene. He often hosted parties. August Strindberg and Victor Rydberg were frequent guests. So was composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger.
From the 1940s to the early 2000s, the Pentecostal movement ran a college here. It was Kaggeholm College. Today, Kaggeholms slott is a conference center. Sisyfosgruppen Holding manages it.
More recently, Kaggeholm has gained fame from the Netflix series “Young Royals.” The manor serves as Hillerska boarding school in the show. Fans travel from all over the world. They visit the filming locations. Even the bus stop has become a shrine.
Kaggeholms slott stands as a landmark. It is a blend of history, architecture and pop culture. It links centuries of Swedish life. From noble families to a fictional boarding school, its story continues.
