Was it a dream? A Cambodian child, maybe six years old, clutches a worn English primer. She whispers, “Hello, teacher.” This is the heart of ECC, the Education Centre for Community, nestled in Po village near Siem Reap. ECC isn’t just a school. It’s a beacon of hope. Founded in 2014 by Savuth and Savon, ECC offers free education to children aged 4 to 17. They believe education is the key to escaping poverty’s grip. ECC is entirely volunteer-run, relying on the kindness of strangers and the dedication of its founders. Savuth, an engineer, built the school. Savon, known as “Mama” to the children, manages the home. They are joined by volunteers like Karen Austin, a retired UK deputy head, who helps structure the curriculum. ECC isn’t just about lessons. It’s about community. Volunteers immerse themselves in village life, experiencing Cambodian traditions firsthand. While the children learn English, volunteers gain invaluable life lessons. ECC also supports local government schools, offering English classes to broaden horizons. It’s a testament to the power of education and the transformative potential of a community united. The little girl’s whispered “hello” echoes the hope for a brighter future, nurtured at ECC.
