What if I told you that Angkor University isn’t the first of its kind in Siem Reap? Right here, centuries before this modern campus existed, stood a trio of prestigious universities. They were collectively known as the Union of Angkor Universities. That’s right, between the 9th and 12th centuries, Siem Reap was a hub of learning. It wasn’t until 2002, however, that the idea for a new university took root. H.E. Neak Oknha Dr. Seang Nam, a member of parliament, envisioned a return to Siem Reap’s scholarly roots. His vision aligned perfectly with Prime Minister Hun Sen’s plan: “One Province, One University”. Angkor University, or A.U. as it’s commonly known, was officially established on July 23, 2004. The university started with five faculties: Business Administration and Tourism, Science and Technology, Humanities and Foreign Languages, Sociology and Law, and Agriculture. Today, Angkor University is a prestigious institution. It ranks among the top 30 universities in Cambodia. It holds the title of best university in Siem Reap province, according to UniRank. A.U. is particularly recognized for its strong programs in nursing, midwifery, engineering, architecture, computer science, and more. The university prides itself on its international approach. Students have opportunities to collaborate with communities and industries all over the world, from France to Japan, from the Philippines to right here in Cambodia.
