Was this gate really a portal to the afterlife? This is the East Gate of Angkor Thom, also known as Thvear Khnoch or the Gate of the Dead. Of the five gates piercing the walls of Angkor Thom, this one possesses a unique, almost eerie charm.

Unlike the other gates, the East Gate of Angkor Thom doesn’t directly connect to the modern road network. It is less visited than the popular Bayon temple. This isolation contributes to its mysterious aura. Venture through it and the jungle envelops you. Those grand stone faces seem to watch your every move.

Like the other gates of Angkor Thom, the East Gate features massive stone faces. They gaze out in all four cardinal directions. Once, a stone bridge crossed the moat. It was lined with Asuras and Devas on either side. Remnants of these carvings remain.

What sets the East Gate apart are the laterite chambers. They extend from the wall on either side of the entrance. Similar structures exist at the north and west gates. Their purpose remains a mystery.

Take a closer look at the platform. Notice the band of medallions. They showcase caricatures common in Bayon-era temples. It’s fascinating to compare these bands across all the gates.

Interestingly, the East Gate retains its original sandstone paving. Look closely. Can you see the wheel ruts? They are from chariots that once crossed this very threshold. Several meters to the west, along the road to the Bayon, you can spot remnants of the inner moat. On the eastern side, with a little exploration through the scrub, you can find remnants of the balustrade. Notice that the causeway here does not appear to be made from recycled stone.

In 1925, significant historical finds were discovered near the East Gate by Henri Marchal. These include rare Hevajra statues, a head of Prajnaparamita, and a Buddha’s head of great artistic significance. Two statues of Avalokitesvara were also found. They might have once occupied the pedestals of the inner chambers.

Legend says the East Gate of Angkor Thom was where convicts were sent for execution. This ominous association adds another layer to its mystique. Some believe the gate served as an exit for the deceased.

For a different perspective, you can walk atop the wall. Head north towards Victory Gate. Or south, towards Prasat Chrung.

The East Gate of Angkor Thom stands as a testament to the rich history and enduring mysteries of this ancient city. It’s a place where the past feels palpable. It invites contemplation. As you pass through, consider the lives that have crossed this threshold. What stories do the stones whisper?
