Ever wonder about buildings whose true purpose remains a mystery? The North Khleang stands before us. It is a silent testament to Angkor Thom’s rich history. It invites us to unravel its secrets.

The North Khleang is one of two similar structures. It is located on the east side of the Royal Square. Its counterpart is the South Khleang. Both buildings stand behind the Prasat Suor Prat towers. They are separated by the royal route to the Victory Gate.

These sandstone structures face the Elephants Terrace. They have prompted much speculation over the centuries. The name “Khleang” means storeroom. But historians doubt this was their primary function.

North Khleang’s construction began under King Jayaviravarman. The South Khleang was built under his successor Suryavarman I. Despite being built at different times they share a similar design. The South Khleang is slightly narrower.

Together the North Khleang and South Khleang gave rise to the Khleang style. It features simple lintels adorned with a central kala. Other notable examples of this style include Phimeanakas and Ta Keo.

The North Khleang’s exact function remains unknown. Some believe they served as reception areas. Others suggest they housed visiting noblemen. A royal oath is carved into one doorway which supports the visitor theory.

Originally the North Khleang was constructed from wood under King Rajendravarman II. Later King Jayavarman V rebuilt it in stone. This may have occurred before construction of the South Khleang.

While perhaps unremarkable up close the North Khleang is picturesque from afar. It stands among the Prasat Suor Prat. The North Khleang offers a glimpse into Angkor’s architectural heritage.

Many visitors consider the North Khleang and South Khleang unremarkable. But they provide a peaceful place to pause. They offer a chance to admire the surrounding landscape. You can capture beautiful photos especially in the afternoon sun.

The North Khleang offers a unique perspective on Angkor’s history. It shows the evolution of Khmer architecture. It reminds us that some mysteries may never be fully solved.
