Who would have thought that you could swim in Victoria Harbour? Approach Beach is one of only two gazetted beaches in Tsuen Wan District where you can do just that.

Approach Beach sits near Yau Kom Tau. It is located on Castle Peak Road in Ting Kau, New Territories. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Government manages it.

Let’s dive into Approach Beach’s story. In May 1987, the beach became officially recognized. The Hong Kong Jockey Club helped the Regional Council open it. But less than ten years later, a problem arose. Oil pollution from large ships became a serious issue.

By May 1995, the beaches in Tsuen Wan District had to close. The construction of the nearby Ting Kau and Tsing Ma Bridges was the reason. The water quality was poor. Lifeguard services were suspended. It wasn’t a pretty picture for Approach Beach.

Fast forward to more recent times. Since June 15, 2011, Approach Beach has been reopened for swimming. What a turnaround.

Now, let’s talk about water quality. In 1995, Approach Beach closed due to worsening water quality. This followed the commissioning of Stage 1 of the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme or HATS. While HATS Stage 1 improved water quality in Victoria Harbour overall, it created problems in the western area. A large quantity of non-disinfected effluent was released from the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works. Not ideal for swimming.

The solution? Permanent disinfection facilities were built at Stonecutters Island under HATS Stage 2. This significantly improved water quality. Finally, Approach Beach could reopen.

What can you expect at Approach Beach today? There are BBQ pits for grilling. You will find changing rooms for convenience. Showers are available to rinse off after a swim. Toilets are on site. Bathing sheds offer additional privacy.

Approach Beach provides stunning views. From here, you can see the Ting Kau Bridge. The Tsing Ma Bridge is also visible.

The Environmental Protection Department rates the beach. Approach Beach is currently a Grade 2 beach for its water quality.

So, next time you are looking for a beach with a view and a story, remember Approach Beach. It is a testament to how a community can overcome challenges. It shows how water quality can be improved. It is a place where you can swim in Victoria Harbour.
