Established in 1989, the Hong Kong Metropolitan University, originally the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong, stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to accessible education. This institution, the only self-financing university established by the Hong Kong government, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Initially focused on distance learning, the Hong Kong Metropolitan University embraced full-time programs in 2001. This shift expanded its reach and solidified its place within Hong Kong’s higher education landscape. In 1997, it achieved full university status, becoming the Open University of Hong Kong. This marked a significant milestone, reflecting its growing reputation and academic rigor. The university’s name changed again in 2021 to its current title, Hong Kong Metropolitan University. This symbolized its evolution into a comprehensive institution serving a diverse student body. The Hong Kong Metropolitan University is more than just a university. In 2024, recognizing the need for more student accommodation, the Hong Kong Metropolitan University acquired the Urbanwood Hotel in Hung Hom, renaming it MU88. This provided much-needed housing for around 400 students, primarily non-local and exchange students. The Hong Kong Metropolitan University boasts multiple campuses across Hong Kong. The main campus, located in Ho Man Tin, houses various facilities. These include a library, laboratories, and even a sound recording studio. The Jockey Club Campus, also in Ho Man Tin, complements the main campus with additional learning spaces and specialized facilities like a clinical nursing center. Beyond Ho Man Tin, the Kwai Hing Campus provides more classrooms and specialized laboratories, including a STEAM Education Laboratory. The university’s journey is deeply intertwined with the city’s own. It reflects Hong Kong’s dynamism, its commitment to progress, and its unwavering belief in the power of education.
