Have you ever heard of a temple built on a rock, shaped like a lotus flower? Here at the Lin Fa Temple, nestled in Tai Hang, that’s exactly what you’ll find. Lin Fa Temple translates to “Temple of the Lotus.” The temple’s unique architecture reflects this name. The front hall, with its double-eaves-tended roof, is a half-octagon. It connects seamlessly to the rectangular main hall, built directly onto a large boulder known as Lotus Rock. This unusual construction, built into the hillside, gives the Lin Fa Temple a distinctive appearance. Two staircases flank the front hall, leading visitors up to the entrance. This differs from traditional Chinese temples where the main entrance is typically in the center. Lin Fa Temple isn’t just an architectural marvel. It’s a vital part of the Tai Hang community. The temple plays a crucial role in the annual Fire Dragon Dance. This vibrant tradition, recognized as intangible cultural heritage, begins with the “fire dragon” receiving blessings from Kwun Yam, the Goddess of Mercy, within Lin Fa Temple. This happens on the 14th day of the eighth lunar month. The “fire dragon” is a long structure shaped like a dragon, adorned with countless burning joss sticks. After the blessing at Lin Fa Temple, the dragon is paraded through the Tai Hang streets. Built in 1863, Lin Fa Temple has been renovated and rebuilt over the years, most recently in 1999. Inside, you’ll find not only Kwun Yam but also other deities like Tai Sui, the Sixty Gods of Time, Skanda, and the god of wealth. The temple’s interior is adorned with lotus flower lamps, symbolizing blessings of safety and prosperity. Intricate wood-carved windows, framed by Dui Lian, a traditional form of Chinese literature, add to the temple’s beauty. Lin Fa Temple embodies the rich history and traditions of Tai Hang. In 2014, this historical and spiritual landmark was officially declared a monument, cementing its importance for generations to come.
