Picture this: a step back in time, right here in modern Shenzhen. We are standing before the Dongguan Assembly Hall. This building whispers tales of a bygone era. It stands as a tangible link to the past.

The Dongguan Assembly Hall is located in Nantou Ancient City. This is within Nanshan district of Shenzhen. It is a city-level cultural relic protection unit. This hall offers a glimpse into the region’s rich history.

Construction began during the Qing Dynasty. It has undergone multiple renovations. These occurred during the Republic of China period and in modern times. The structure is made of brick, wood, and stone.

Facing east, the Dongguan Assembly Hall features a three-bay, two-entry layout. It spans 11 meters in width and extends 24.5 meters deep. Currently, only a single-bay structure remains. It is a flat-roofed building measuring 4.3 meters wide and 12.3 meters deep.

Above the main entrance, you can see a plaque. It reads “Dongguan Assembly Hall”. The inscription indicates a date of “Mengdong in the Year of Wuchen during the Tongzhi reign”. This corresponds to late autumn of 1868.

The hall boasts unique architectural details. Carved floral patterns adorn the gable. Painted floral murals decorate the walls. Gray cylinder tiles line the roof. The roof features upturned eaves. Its design includes a solid gable top.

The rear hall has a three-bay layout. It is 11 meters wide and 9.04 meters deep. Inside, four inscribed bricks commemorate the renovations. These renovations occurred during the establishment of the Bao’an Public Office.

Nantou Ancient City itself is a treasure trove of history. Some say its origins trace back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty around 331 AD. The existing walled city was constructed in 1394. Throughout history, it has been governed by various regions. These include Hong Kong, Macau, Dongguan, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai.

Today, Nantou Ancient City still features historical remnants. The Nancheng Gate and Dongcheng Gate stand between houses. The Guandi Temple and Xin’an Ancient City add to the historical ambiance.

Outside the South Gate, you’ll find the Nantou Ancient City Museum. It showcases cultural relics. These relics narrate the ancient city’s glorious past. Initially built to protect Dongguan, it later served as the government seat for Xin’an County.

Shenzhen’s culture is dynamic. It blends traditions with contemporary elements. The Dongguan Assembly Hall stands as a testament to this blend. It reflects both southern and northern cultural influences. It also incorporates Western elements.

The city promotes culture through various means. These include cultural facilities and themed events. Shenzhen was even awarded the UNESCO title of “Design City”. It is a hub of cultural exchange and innovation.

As we conclude our visit to the Dongguan Assembly Hall, consider its role. It serves as a reminder of Shenzhen’s historical roots. It enriches the city’s vibrant cultural landscape. It also serves as a bridge between the past and the present.
