In 1951 the Kadoorie brothers established the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association. Their goal was to help poor farmers gain skills and resources. They provided training agricultural assets and interest-free loans. Legend says a lone tangerine tree inspired Sir Horace Kadoorie. This tree proved citrus could grow on Hong Kong’s hills. This inspired the creation of Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden in 1956. Initially it focused on experimental agriculture. Researchers developed climate-specific farming methods and bred pigs and chickens adapted to the local environment.
