Picture this. You stand overlooking the sea from Xiantouling ridge. The Shenzhen Museum isn’t just a building. It’s a portal to a past stretching back 7000 years.

Shenzhen’s story begins long before its modern skyscrapers. Primitive humans lived here in Xiantouling. They were the earliest known inhabitants. Their skill is evident in exquisite pottery. Intricate urns and polished porcelain speak of their craftsmanship.

These early settlers weren’t just potters. They were also innovators. One unearthed tool remains a mystery. Was it for grinding calluses from feet? Or for imprinting pottery? Perhaps even a stone bat for making bark cloth? We can only speculate.

Shenzhen’s population grew. The museum showcases the largest collection of Shang dynasty tombs in the Lingnan region. These 94 tombs hint at a thriving community. Yet life wasn’t peaceful. The Yue people loved war. Bronze spears are a stark reminder of a conflict-ridden past. Even their drinking cups were technically advanced. Spouts prevented spills. This shows an early understanding of engineering.

By the Han dynasty mathematics flourished. A brick engraved with a multiplication table testifies to this. The Wei Jin and Northern and Southern dynasties brought social upheaval. Many migrants arrived boosting the craft industry particularly ceramics. A chicken-head ewer is an example of this southern ceramic tradition.

Shenzhen’s location by the ocean shaped its economy. Oyster farming salt production and pearl harvesting became crucial. The Song dynasty witnessed the peak of salt production. The Diefu Salt Farm alone produced an astounding 900 tons annually. Oyster cultivation also has a long history going back to the Jin dynasty. Shajing oysters became particularly famous during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Shenzhen’s coastal location also made it a strategic point for defense against pirates. Nantou a town at the intersection of two waterways was a key coastal defense. Dapeng Fortress built over 600 years defended against constant attacks. It was renowned as the best coastal fortress. Its strategic importance was undeniable.

Shenzhen’s Hakka heritage is also prominent. Castle-style compounds reflect their culture. These dwellings served both as homes and fortifications. The Dawan Former Residence is one of the largest remaining examples. These demonstrate the lasting impact of Hakka immigration on Shenzhen’s architecture.

The Shenzhen Museum’s collection offers a captivating journey. From prehistoric pottery to sophisticated engineering. From fierce battles to flourishing commerce. This museum isn’t just a building. It’s a story waiting to be explored. A story of Shenzhen’s enduring spirit. A spirit that transformed a small fishing village into a global powerhouse.
