Centuries melt away as you approach DaPeng Fortress. This walled village whispers tales of pirates and brave defenders. DaPeng Fortress stands as a testament to China’s coastal defense. It is a place where history echoes in every stone.

DaPeng Fortress was built in 1394 during the Ming Dynasty. Its purpose was to protect the region from pirate attacks. Imagine the fear and tension of those times. In 1571, Japanese pirates laid siege to DaPeng Fortress for over forty days. They came equipped with scaling ladders. The defenders bravely resisted.

Over time, DaPeng Fortress grew into a bustling town. It thrived during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The local dialect, a mix of Hakka and Cantonese, is called Dapeng dialect. DaPeng Fortress defended the Thousand Household City. It played a vital role in safeguarding the coast.

During the Qing Dynasty, DaPeng Fortress became the Dapeng Marine Master Camp. Nine districts fell under its jurisdiction. These included Dongyongkou and Lantau. During the flood season, DaPeng Fortress oversaw forts like Tuotu and Lantau. The city was also a stronghold during the Opium War against Britain. The Qing dynasty navy promoted the Dapeng camp to the Dapeng Association.

General Zhenwei, an anti-British hero, was stationed here. His contributions were truly remarkable. Today, the Pengcheng Community occupies the area. Shenzhen is sometimes referred to as “Pengcheng” because of DaPeng Fortress.

Wander through the DaPeng Fortress. You will see antique city gates and ancient streets. The fortress also features old dwellings and marine defense relics. The South Gate is the main entrance. It has been repaired many times. It stands as a majestic reminder of the Ming Dynasty.

Visit the Residence of General Liu Qilong. This courtyard building showcases Qing Dynasty architecture. The Tianhou Palace, dedicated to the sea goddess, dates back to the early 1400s. Explore the Dapeng warehouse. It dates back to 1658.

Notice the traditional folk houses with their unique courtyards. Once, there were five military signaling towers here. The Diaolou, built during Emperor Kangxi’s reign, is a sight to behold. The wood carvings in its ancestral hall are exquisite.
