Wow What a collection! Before you stands the Stephen Hui Geological Museum. Hong Kong’s first and only geological museum. This incredible place opened its doors on January 16 2009. Its mission is simple to share the wonders of geology with the world. The museum is housed within the James Hsioung Lee Building on the University of Hong Kong campus. It’s part of the Department of Earth Sciences the only such department in all of Hong Kong.
Inside the Stephen Hui Geological Museum you’ll find around 10000 catalogued specimens. These amazing rocks minerals and fossils come from all corners of the globe. Dr Stephen Hui a renowned mining geologist and philanthropist played a pivotal role in its creation. His personal collection forms the core of the museum’s Earth Materials gallery. His generous donation and the ongoing support of his family made this museum a reality.
The museum isn’t just a static display. It’s a dynamic interactive experience. There are four main galleries. Dynamic Earth explores the forces that shape our planet. Earth Evolution takes you on a journey through geological time. Earth Materials showcases the incredible diversity of rocks and minerals. The Geological History of Hong Kong gallery focuses on the unique geology of this vibrant city.
But that’s not all. The Stephen Hui Geological Museum also hosts temporary exhibitions. Recent exhibits focused on the Krakatau volcano in Indonesia and the distinctive landforms of Poland. There’s always something new and exciting to discover. The museum also offers guided tours and loan sets for educational purposes. The museum even has a website with information in both English and Chinese.
