Wong Tai Sin, the deity to whom this temple is dedicated, was once a humble shepherd boy. Born in Zhejiang province in the 4th century, Wong Tai Sin, originally named Wong Cho-ping, discovered Taoism at the tender age of 15. He met an immortal on Heng Shan (Red Pine Hill), who guided him on a path of enlightenment. Legend tells us that Wong Tai Sin learned to refine cinnabar into a miraculous medicine during 40 years in seclusion. He ultimately achieved immortality and became revered for his ability to punish evil, heal the sick, foresee the future, and grant wishes.

The Wong Tai Sin Temple, originally a private shrine, opened its doors to the public during Lunar New Year in 1934. Remarkably, it withstood the destruction of Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation in World War II. Many attribute this to Wong Tai Sin’s protective powers. The temple received government approval to open year-round in 1956 and has been a beacon of hope ever since.

At the heart of the Wong Tai Sin Temple stands the Main Altar. It displays a striking portrait of Wong Tai Sin. The backdrop features detailed wooden sculptures. They depict the story of his journey from shepherd boy to deity. Engravings of Taoist, Buddhist, and Confucian scriptures and images adorn the walls. The large open space in front of the Main Altar serves as the main worship area. Watch as visitors bow three times with burning incense, shake fortune sticks, and anxiously await their interpretation by fortune tellers. Look for the bronze statues of the 12 Zodiac Animals on the secondary platform.

Wong Tai Sin Temple also boasts a unique feature. Five structures, arranged in a row, symbolize the five elements in feng shui: the Bronze Pavilion (metal), the Archives Hall (wood), the Yuk Yik Fountain (water), the Yue Hung Shrine (fire), and the Earth Wall (earth). Don’t miss the Good Wish Garden at the rear of the complex. This Chinese-style garden houses a miniature replica of Beijing’s Summer Palace and a replica of the Nine Dragon mural from Pei Hai Park. A white jade statue of sheep stands as a tribute to Wong Tai Sin’s legendary ability to transform boulders into sheep.
