Whispers of justice echoed through the halls of the New Territories Magistracy. It was 1961, a pivotal year for the burgeoning New Territories. The New Territories Magistracy opened its doors, marking a significant step in the region’s legal development. This building, the first of its kind in the area, stood as a beacon of law and order. It served as a testament to the changing times. The New Territories Magistracy quickly became a cornerstone of the community. It witnessed countless cases, from petty disputes to complex legal battles. For over four decades, the New Territories Magistracy served the community diligently. The wheels of justice turned within its walls, shaping the lives of many. Fast forward to 2002, a new chapter began for the New Territories Magistracy. A new, modern facility was built to accommodate the growing needs of the region. The original building closed its doors, its role as a courthouse coming to an end. But the story of the New Territories Magistracy didn’t end there. The building found new life in the spotlight, becoming a popular filming location. Movies like “Internal Affairs II” and “A Guilty Conscience” used its historic halls as backdrops for their dramatic scenes. This gave the building a new kind of prominence. In 2018, the New Territories Magistracy underwent a remarkable transformation. Thanks to the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme, it was reborn as the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Leadership Institute. The building’s historic features were carefully preserved. Court No. 2, for instance, still boasts the original magistrate’s bench, prisoner’s dock, and public sitting area. You can almost picture the intense legal dramas that unfolded here. A former detention cell, the grand staircase with its ornate ironwork balustrades, all whisper tales of the building’s past. The New Territories Magistracy stands as a symbol of adaptation and renewal. It has seamlessly transitioned from a courthouse to a filming location to a leadership institute. It continues to serve the community, albeit in a different capacity. This building embodies the spirit of the New Territories. It demonstrates the ability to evolve and adapt while preserving its rich history.
