Gazing up at the majestic tiled roof of Cheong Wa Dae, did you ever imagine the secrets hidden within these walls? Cheong Wa Dae, also known as the Blue House, has witnessed a fascinating history. It served as South Korea’s presidential office and residence from 1948 to 2022. Cheong Wa Dae wasn’t always the center of political power. Originally, the site housed a royal villa during the Goryeo Dynasty, built in 1104 by King Sukjong. Later, it became the back garden of Gyeongbokgung Palace during the Joseon Dynasty. The complex we see today, however, largely took shape during the rule of South Korean presidents. The iconic blue tiles that give Cheong Wa Dae its nickname were part of a major renovation in 1991, during President Roh Tae-woo’s term. The blue tiles, numbering 150,000, are a symbol of traditional Korean architecture. They are known for their durability and vibrant color, crafted using methods similar to fine pottery. Inside the Main Building, modern amenities blend with traditional elements. The second floor housed the president’s office, reception room, and smaller dining rooms like the Inwang Room and Baegaksil. The first floor included the First Lady’s office and the Mugunghwa Room. Beyond the Main Building, the complex includes several other notable structures. The Presidential Residence, completed in 1990, provided living quarters for the president and their family. The State Reception House, Yeongbin-gwan, hosted large-scale events and welcomed foreign dignitaries. One peculiar fact about Cheong Wa Dae is the discovery of a stone monument during construction, inscribed with “Cheonha Jeil Bokji,” meaning “the most propitious place under heaven.” This fueled the belief that Cheong Wa Dae occupies an auspicious site. Yet, paradoxically, some believe the Blue House is cursed. The “Blue House Curse” refers to the misfortunes that have befallen many former South Korean presidents. As you leave Cheong Wa Dae, ponder the juxtaposition of its serene beauty and tumultuous history. This place served as a backdrop for both triumph and tragedy, reflecting the complexities of South Korea’s journey.
