Beneath the Seoul skyline, the Mapo Bridge stretches across the Han River. It links two districts, Mapo and Yeongdeungpo. But the Mapo Bridge carries more than just traffic. It carries stories, some of hope, some of despair. Completed in 1970, the Mapo Bridge was initially called the Seoul Bridge. Its name changed in 1984, but its significance continued to grow. Between 2007 and 2012, over 100 people attempted suicide from the bridge. This led to the somber nickname, “Suicide Bridge.” In a compassionate attempt to intervene, Samsung Life Insurance and the Seoul Metropolitan Government launched the “Bridge of Life” campaign in 2012. The bridge’s railings were adorned with encouraging words, jokes, and photos of happy families. Motion sensors triggered lights and messages as people walked by, offering comfort and connection. There was even a statue of two friends, a comforting presence on the bridge. Sadly, these efforts weren’t entirely successful. By 2015, the lights and slogans were replaced with barriers. A more direct approach to prevent the tragedies that had occurred. Yet, the Mapo Bridge remains a powerful symbol.
