He was instrumental in establishing the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. He held various positions including member of the Legislative Assembly. Lyuh returned to Korea after Japan’s defeat. He played a significant role in the establishment of the People’s Republic of Korea. He served as Chairman of the National People’s Representative Conference. His efforts to unify the political left and right were ultimately unsuccessful. Tragically Lyuh was assassinated in 1947. A young man from North Korea murdered him. Han Chi-geun was a member of the White Shirts Society a right-wing terrorist group. Lyuh’s death was a profound loss. It plunged Korea into further turmoil.
