Behold the Olympic Park World Peace Gate. A symbol of hope rising from the heart of Seoul.

This magnificent structure stands as a testament to the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics. It embodies the spirit of peace and harmony. Architect Kim Chung-up’s final masterpiece. He completed it on August 31 1988. A mere two months before his death in May 1988.

Construction began on December 31 1986. The gate’s design is breathtaking. Steel-reinforced concrete pillars reach towards the sky. They resemble outstretched arms or perhaps powerful bird wings. They welcome visitors to the park and indeed the world.

Thirty line pillar masks flank the gate’s entrance. Sculptor Seung-Taek Lee created these bronze faces. They stand on 3-meter high stone pillars. They also serve as lampposts. These fascinating double-faced masks add a layer of mystery and wonder to the scene.

Gaze upwards. Underneath the gate’s soaring roof wings. You’ll find a vibrant mural. It’s called “A Painting of Four Spirits”. This masterpiece uses blue and red. They symbolize the oriental concepts of Um and Yang. Representing the universe and creativity.

Four mythical guardians grace this mural. A red phoenix in the south. A black turtle in the north. A white tiger in the west. And a blue dragon in the east. They ascend towards heaven. They symbolize the strength and freedom of the Korean people.

Beneath the gate burns an eternal flame. A declaration of peace is inscribed there. A call for world harmony and happiness for all. Regardless of ideology race or religion. This enduring flame and declaration serve as powerful reminders of the gate’s core message. The Korean people are justly proud of this remarkable monument. The Olympic Park World Peace Gate a beacon of peace and hope in the heart of Seoul. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Olympic Games. It inspires visitors to strive for global unity.
