Lost in time, yet vibrant in spirit, stands Gyeonghuigung Palace. Known as the “Palace of Serene Harmony,” Gyeonghuigung whispers tales of royalty, resilience, and rebirth. Established in 1617 by King Gwanghaegun, Gyeonghuigung became a sanctuary for Joseon kings, a secondary palace offering respite from the grandeur of Gyeongbokgung. Imagine strolling through the once sprawling complex, a network of 100 buildings humming with court life. Picture King Gojong’s triumphant return to Gyeonghuigung in 1896 after seeking refuge at the Russian legation. This very ground witnessed Korea’s bold proclamation of independence from Imperial China’s rule in 1897, a pivotal moment etched into the stones of Gyeonghuigung. Sadly, fires and the destructive hand of Japanese occupation ravaged much of the palace, leaving only fragments of its former glory. The Sungjeongjeon throne hall and Heunghwamun gate, silent witnesses to centuries of history, were dismantled and scattered throughout Seoul. Today, Gyeonghuigung stands as a testament to Korea’s enduring spirit. Though only 33% of the original palace remains, ongoing restoration efforts breathe life back into its historic walls. Within its grounds, the Seoul Museum of History and the Seoul Museum of Art stand as guardians of Korea’s cultural legacy, ensuring that the stories of Gyeonghuigung continue to resonate through time. As you gaze upon the restored Heunghwamun gate, imagine the countless dignitaries and royalty who once passed beneath its arch. Gyeonghuigung, though scarred by time, remains a powerful symbol of Korea’s past and a vibrant hub for its present.
