Imagine stepping back in time to 1638. This is when Sungyeoljeon Shrine was first built. It honored King Onjo. He reigned from 18 BC to 28 AD. He was the founder of the Baekje Dynasty.

Sungyeoljeon Shrine stands as a testament to Korean history. Later, Lee Seo’s memorial tablet was placed here. He oversaw Namhansanseong Fortress construction from 1580 to 1637.

Originally, this sacred place was called Onjowangsa. King Jeongjo renamed it Sungyeol in 1795. The name Sungyeol means “loyal.”

Today, Sungyeoljeon Shrine is a major feature of Namhansanseong Fortress. UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site in 2014.

Ancestral rites occur every September 5 on the lunar calendar. These rituals honor King Onjo and Lee Seo. The shrine complex includes several important structures.

Jeonsacheong manages ancestral rites. Bujeon enshrines Lee Seo’s tablet. A lecture hall provides space for learning. The Hongsalmun is a red gate. It has a spiked top.

Bujeon sits east below the main shrine. Jeonsacheong is on the opposite side of Bujeon. Preparations for rites and rituals happen here.

The main shrine measures 3 kan in front and 2 kan at the sides. Its gable roof resembles the Chinese character “man”. The sides feature Hwabangbyeok walls.

Sungyeoljeon Shrine offers a glimpse into Korea’s dynastic past. Its architecture and history are well-preserved. Visitors can experience traditional Korean culture here.
